The Streets of Matsuzaki

Nothing beats strolling around a quiet laid-back town while having a breeze of fresh air. Roaming around the town is an attraction in itself. Not only will you meet locals, but the neighborhood cats as well!

You’ll also surely catch sight of some buildings lined with Namako-walls, which are constructed from plastered latticed walls and flat roof tiles arranged in a mesh pattern. Among the numerous walled homes still standing in Matsuzaki, the former Kondo House, whose family once operated a pharmacy there, is particularly well-known.

Jinrikisha or Rickshaw rides are also a popular activity to experience while in town. From the Meiji to the Taisho and early Showa eras, the human-powered rickshaw was the primary mode of transportation for people. The rickshaw service which usually runs from 10 AM to noon, has two routes: the Namako-wall circuit and the "round the town" course.

There are also several shrines to visit in the area like the Inashimo-Jinja Shrine where a thousand-year-old ginkgo tree resides. The tree has been named a special natural monument by the Shizuoka prefecture. On the grounds is also the Shinmei Sui, a sacred spring with natural water that flows from a cliff.
